Stop use of DDT
Dear Editor,
Arunachal has recently observed the World Environment Day with an aim to preserve the environment. But the big question is how far we have achieved our goal in preserving environment.
In one hand we are talking about maintaining and preserving the environment and on the other hand the Government is indiscriminately using the DDT during summer season to prevent malaria and breeding of mosquitoes in villages. Studies reveal that the benefit of DDT is minimal in compared to environmental and ecological damage it causes.
There was a time when sparrows and hawks used to flock around the huts and streets; foxes used to howl at night and stole our goats. Now I do not see these birds and animals in Seijosa in East Kameng district. Recently concerned department applied DDT in the villages of Seijosa without any concern for the environment and the ecology. Villagers also complain ineffectiveness of DDT to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes now. The illiterate villagers are even applying DDT on the vegetable plants and trees to prevent from pests without knowing its detrimental effects on health and environment.
I as a common citizen relate this to the indiscriminate uses of DDT only. The Environmental department, if it exists in the state and the forest department should go for detailed studies to preserve the environment. Only awareness on the forest fire won’t serve the purpose. In other part of the country, the use of DDT has been banned but why our so called peace state is lagging behind in all aspects.
I through this daily urge the government to stop the use of DDT in the state and also request the learned citizens of the state to prevent the use of DDT in your localities and villages and acquaint the villagers of its bad effects on the environment and health.

World needs more health workers
The world is facing shortage of over four million health workers and 57 countries are experiencing a critical shortage. The health workforce shortage has received increased attention over the past few years, starting with the World Health Organization’s 2006 World Health Report on the crisis. Health systems are still weak or failing in many countries, and health workers are witnessing how every little failure touches someone’s life.
A healthy community, though, is more than a community with access to a health worker. It’s more than an absence of acute illness. Climate change, social inequities, poverty, armed conflict and other humanitarian crises, and pollution are just some of the factors affecting health and the ability of health workers to do their jobs.
However, many countries have invested in strengthening national health systems and creating a policy environment that supports human resources for health. Individuals and communities around the globe are increasingly interconnected. Health workers are links within communities. Health workers can truly be change agents in helping their communities come together to address a myriad of challenges with local solutions and bringing the voice and needs of their communities forward.
A dramatic shift is necessary to solve some of the most pressing global health problems. Countries need more health workers, and they need to better prepare them to operate in a more integrated world.
